The Final Shot: The Ena Micro 9 is the best choice for users looking for a machine that can make both espresso shots and milk based drinks like lattes and cappuccinos. Similarities

At first glance, the Jura ENA 1 and 9 are very similar, both in functionality and appearance. Yes, the ENA 1 is black while the 9 has the more updated stainless-steel look, but the two machines operate in almost the exact same way. They will probably appeal to the same kind of customer, depending on how many extra features are desired.

The ENA 1 and ENA 9 are the answer for coffee lovers who want to drink excellent espresso at home. They are single-cup brewers, offering you the option to brew one cup of coffee or one espresso shot at a time.

This allows you to customize each cup depending on the drinker, a huge improvement over the drip coffee makers.

Both espresso machines makers are automatic, meaning they do all the work for you, from grinding to tamping to brewing.

They both have internal burr grinders that make a separate coffee grinder superfluous. They also feature a large water tank capacity with a replaceable water filter to make sure only the purest water runs through your machine, reducing mineral buildup.

All the machines in Jura’s ENA line are compact, but at less than 13 inches tall, the ENA 1 and ENA 9 will fit under even the lowest of cabinets. The small footprint ensures you maximize counter space in your kitchen. Even though they are modest in size, they share added features like an adjustable cup clearance to accommodate your tall travel tumblers.

Also worth noting, both machines include a pre-infusion function. This is a feature that means grinds are gently expanded to prevent clumping and channeling. It aids in getting a smooth extraction, a luxury feature not included in lower-end products and a huge factor in enhancing espresso flavor and crema.

Differences

Milk Frothing

The biggest different between the Jura ENA 1 and ENA 9 is that the ENA 9 has the added benefit of milk frothing capability, so you can have all the lattes, cappuccinos, and mochas your heart desires.

The ENA1 is designed to make espresso and americanos, and has no milk frothing function. You can add the espresso from the ENA 1 to milk you froth separately, but it won’t be the same as a latte or cappuccino made with the ENA 9.

The milk frothing is easy to use on the ENA 9, and while it doesn’t come with a milk pitcher, any glass container or tumbler will suffice. All you have to do is put the flexible milk tube into the milk, set the machine for the drink you want, and you can walk away and come back later to a perfectly made beverage. The machine mixes the milk and espresso itself so it truly is a one-step process.

The ENA 9’s cleaning process after each drink clears the milk and coffee out of the inner workings, keeping your machine running at peak operation.

Both the ENA 1 and ENA 9 require extra upkeep with cleansing tablets and descaling schedules, but any automatic coffee maker is the same in this regard.

The inclusion of milk frothing is an individual decision you’ll need to make based on your preferences. For people who usually drink shots of espresso, the ENA 1 will save you money and give you a more streamlined brewing experience.

If your household prefers lattes, mochas, cappuccinos and similar, the ENA 9 is worth the added expense.

Control Panels

The ENA 1 features a touch panel with depressions to select the cup sizes and aroma levels. The three selections include espresso, ristretto and coffee, and is a more stripped-down selection than the ENA 9. It will appeal to users who want a less complicated machine and who don’t require the added frills of the ENA 9.

The ENA 9’s control panel is a rotary-style switch with a small display panel and a few pre-programmed buttons. The buttons are easy press-and-go selections while the rotary switch will allow you to tweak custom settings to allow you precise control over the brewing process. Coffee geeks like me will appreciate the customization and should consider upgrading to the ENA 9 over the ENA 1.

Hot Water

Many users prefer to have the option to have their espresso machine dispense hot (closer to boiling) water for tea and other non-espresso beverages. Unfortunately the ENA 1 does not include this function, something that might disappoint some.

If you look forward to an afternoon cup of tea or warming your mug in advance of coffee, you will definitely want to look into the ENA 9, which does provides that hot water option.

HeatPID Temperature Control

If you’re well-versed in the art of pulling a shot of espresso, you know that one of the biggest contributing factors to a perfect shot is the temperature of the water.

The ENA 1 uses a mechanical thermostat to control the temperature of the brewing water, but the ENA 9 has a PID controller that holds the water at a precise 197 to 205 degree F. An electronic PID controller offers better control, stability, and accuracy than a regular mechanical thermometer.

Sleep Mode

An additional benefit of the ENA 9 over the ENA 1 is its energy saving mode. Like many of you, I’m concerned about not only conserving energy but also saving money on my electric bill, so I think this is a really great feature. It keeps the ENA 9 from constantly running and heating. The machine quickly jumps back to life, though, and speedily brews when you wake it up back up, usually 30 seconds to a minute of wait time.

I also really like that you can have the machine turn on at a programed specified time. So if your schedule is routine enough, you’ll be able to have near-instantaneous caffeine in the mornings or that crucial hour in the afternoon when your energy dips after lunch. The only thing that would be faster would be an I.V. drip!

Summary

I found in my side-by-side comparison of these machines that the decision of which to buy really depends on the preferences of the purchaser. The Jura ENA 9 has what I would consider the expected added features to justify the higher price point. However, the value of these features will be determined by your own needs.

The extra option that jumps out immediately is the milk frothing capability. The routine latte-drinker knows this isn’t something they can compromise on. The ENA 9’s other upgrades are nice, but not strictly necessary to the casual user or those who like a simple espresso shot most of the time.

Both machines have similar features like the internal grinders, roomy water filters, and one-button brewing options. They will keep a busy household well-caffeinated and offer a high quality espresso shot at the push of a button.

I am a die-hard espresso fan. I love every form of the drink from straight espresso shots to lattes and cappuccinos. I currently use a Breville BES870XL Barista, it is an awesome machine. BUT, my dream machine is definitely an Italian Quickmill Andreja. Those bad boys make badass espresso. I love answering your questions, leave a comment or question below!
